Fifth Adjournment in the Trial of the Mayor of Ayia Napa – Trial Begins Almost 2 Years Late

The trial of the Mayor of Ayia Napa, who is accused of a €765,000 European grant case for the upgrade of his hotel 15 years ago, has been adjourned for the fifth time. The new trial date is set for June 3, 2026, almost two years after the indictment was served. The adjournment is due to the priority given to another case with a defendant in custody. The initial trial date was set for February 11, 2025, but was postponed due to the non-delivery of evidence to the defense. Further postponements followed for various reasons. The Mayor of Ayia Napa and the company L. IOANNOU & Z. PIERIS LIMITED are the defendants in the case. The charges against the mayor include forgery, circulation of a false document, obtaining money by false pretenses, false reports by company officials and money laundering. The mayor denies the charges and is released on bail. The case originated from an audit investigation, which revealed falsified financial statements submitted to the CTO to secure the grant. The investigation showed that the amounts relating to borrowing were presented lower than reality.
