Cabinet to Decide on Support Package for Livestock Farmers

The Council of Ministers is expected to make decisions today on a comprehensive support package for livestock farmers, as announced by President Nikos Christodoulides. This move follows the crisis caused by foot-and-mouth disease, but also as a response to crises facing Cyprus, such as the fires in the mountainous region of Limassol. The package of measures includes immediate financial assistance as an advance on compensation, full compensation for those affected, support for their income, and rapid reactivation of livestock production. Specifically, it provides for the immediate payment of compensation for hay, animal feed, and animal products, as well as income support for 12 months for those who resume their activities. In addition, the government will undertake the direct purchase of animals from areas outside Cyprus that are free of the disease, as well as cover the cost of necessary tests and vaccines. Finally, there will be special support for livestock farmers affected by the grazing ban.
