Who are the Basij Militias Sowing Terror Among Protesters in Iran?

The situation in Iran is escalating, with growing concerns about the suppression of anti-government protests. According to the Human Rights Activists News Agency, more than 544 people have been killed in the last 15 days, including eight children. The Iranian regime claims the situation is under control, but protesters continue their mobilization. At the center of the concerns is the activity of the Basij militias, a volunteer paramilitary organization that supports the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The Basij were founded after the 1979 Islamic Revolution and have been used to suppress protests and enforce state control over society. During the Iran-Iraq war, the Basij recruited hundreds of thousands of volunteers, including children and the elderly, and participated in aggressive tactics. After 2009, their role was further strengthened as they were used to suppress protests following the disputed elections. The Basij operate throughout Iran, organized around mosques and primarily recruit people from poorer and more conservative social strata. The organization has been accused of human rights violations and violent suppression.
