President of Cyprus: EU Presidency is a National Mission

The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, described the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU as a national mission and priority. He emphasized that Cyprus has been systematically working towards the Presidency for the past two years and that the entire Cabinet is involved under the coordination of the Deputy Minister for European Affairs. President Christodoulides highlighted the advantages of Cyprus as a small member state, such as the ease of avoiding national agendas and the ability to function as an honest mediator. He also mentioned Cyprus's geographical location close to the Middle East and its experience as a member state under occupation, which allows it to better understand the situation in Ukraine. The goal of the Presidency is to promote a more autonomous European Union and move away from the image of Cyprus as a country with only one issue.
