Trial for the Murder of George Lyngeridis Begins Today

The trial for the fatal injury of police officer George Lyngeridis begins today, Friday, January 26th, after 2.5 months and 5 postponements. His mother, Evgenia Stratou-Lyngeridis, expressed her hope for JUSTICE through a social media post. The start of the trial was delayed due to a lawyers' strike, who were protesting the initial decision to hold it in Korydallos prison. The court will continue to convene in the specially designed hall of the women's prison in Korydallos, having scheduled three additional court dates by the end of the month. George Lyngeridis was hit by a flare outside the "Melina Merkouri" indoor stadium in Rentis, during the volleyball match between Olympiacos and Panathinaikos in December 2023. The case concerns not only the fatal attack but also a series of fan-related assaults. A total of 142 individuals linked to Olympiacos hooligans are accused of serious felonies, including leading and participating in a criminal organization, possession of explosives, and causing an explosion. Simultaneously, five high-ranking officials of Olympiacos FC are accused of inciting sports violence and funding a criminal organization. The acts attributed to the defendants allegedly took place between 2019 and 2024, both inside and outside stadiums. The trial is expected to be lengthy and complex due to the large number of defendants and the severity of the charges.
