Nationwide Foot-and-Mouth Disease Vaccinations Underway, Farmers Seek EU Oversight in Occupied Territories

A nationwide vaccination campaign against foot-and-mouth disease is underway in Cyprus, with simultaneous vaccinations in all provinces. The campaign is being carried out in parallel with vaccinations within a 10-kilometer restriction zone in the livestock area of Larnaca, where cases of the disease have been identified. Priority is given to vaccinating cattle and goats/sheep located around pig farms, and vaccinations will then be extended to the remaining goats and sheep. The process is being implemented in collaboration with private veterinarians. Vaccines for pigs have been ordered from Germany and are expected as soon as the necessary procedures are completed by the supply company. So far, no new positive cases have been identified, but additional cases cannot be ruled out due to the high concentration of livestock units in the Larnaca area. The authorities' goal is to contain the disease in this specific area. It is expected that the entire animal population will be vaccinated nationwide, estimated at approximately 85,000 cattle and 470,000 goats and sheep. At the same time, agricultural bodies are calling for substantial oversight from the EU regarding the use of funds for the control of zoonotic diseases in the occupied territories. Organized livestock farmers will meet with the President of the Republic on Sunday to raise the issue of the need for a coordinating mechanism from the EU, involving the Veterinary Services of Cyprus and the competent services in the occupied territories, to monitor the efforts being made on the other side to eradicate the disease. It is noted that the EU has been funding programs to eliminate zoonotic diseases in the occupied territories since 2021.
