Snacks: From Easy Fix to Health Trap – Choices That Increase Risk and the Worst Time to Consume

A new study published in the European Journal of Nutrition reveals that consuming unhealthy snacks increases the risk of stroke and cardiovascular disease. The study, based on the analysis of the dietary habits of 854 people, showed that about half of the participants did not maintain the same quality of diet between main meals and snacks. This inconsistency negatively affected indicators such as blood sugar and lipids. Scientists emphasize that replacing unhealthy snacks, such as chips and sweets, with fruits and nuts is an easy way to improve health. In Britain, 24% of daily energy intake comes from snacks. The study found that those who preferred healthy snacks were more likely to maintain a normal weight and had better metabolic health. Conversely, those who consumed unhealthy snacks, even if they followed a healthy diet at main meals, had a higher Body Mass Index (BMI), increased visceral fat, and higher levels of triglycerides after eating. In addition, the time of snack consumption appears to play a role, as snacks after 9 pm were linked to worse blood indicators. The study highlights the importance of snack quality and the need for conscious choice of healthy options, such as fruits and nuts, to maintain good health.
