Serious Problems in Animal Welfare, Says Environmental Commissioner

The Commissioner for the Environment and Animal Welfare, Antonia Theodosiou, highlights serious and long-standing problems in animal welfare in Cyprus, such as the large number of stray animals, low marking rates, shortcomings in the implementation of legislation, abandonment and abuse, as well as a lack of shelter infrastructure. Ms. Theodosiou presented a comprehensive Plan of Measures and Actions to improve the welfare of dogs and cats, which has been submitted to the relevant Ministries. The plan includes proposals for mass sterilization, marking, strengthening shelters, enhanced enforcement of legislation, creation of public veterinary services, and an electronic platform for complaints. The Commissioner stressed the crucial role of local government and is awaiting the passage of the amending Dog Law.
