Taxi Drivers in Larnaca Announce Work Stoppage and Strike Action

Taxi drivers in Larnaca, Cyprus, have announced a four-hour work stoppage on Tuesday, January 13th, from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., protesting the unregulated operation of ride-hailing apps, particularly at Larnaca Airport. The Pan-Cypriot Federation of Urban Taxi Drivers (POAT) describes the issue as a matter of "professional survival" and accuses the relevant authorities of inaction despite repeated meetings. If no immediate and substantial action is taken by the government, the taxi drivers warn of a 24-hour strike on January 20th, and an indefinite strike on January 28th. They express their frustration with the lack of results despite their efforts to negotiate with the Licensing Authority and the Department of Road Transport. The main demands of the taxi drivers are the immediate cessation of ride-hailing app operations at Larnaca Airport, except for those licensed in the Larnaca district, and the strict enforcement of taxi base regulations by all apps, without exceptions. They believe the unregulated activity of these apps undermines their profession. POAT emphasizes the need to enforce the law and restore legality, warning that responsibility for the consequences will lie with those who knew about the situation and chose not to intervene. They highlight that the situation has reached a critical point, jeopardizing their professional survival.
