AKEL Secretary-General Urges AHK for Electricity Supply Security and Lower Prices

The Secretary-General of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, met with the management of the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (AHK) and requested assurance of adequate and secure electricity supply, as well as a reduction in electricity prices. Stefanou emphasized that Cyprus faces significant challenges to its energy security due to its geographical isolation and called on the government to present a comprehensive energy plan. The AHK, for its part, presented the actions it is taking to strengthen the system's adequacy, such as the installation of energy storage systems. However, it faces challenges due to the high cost and limited availability of new production machines, as well as the operation of old generators over 40 years old. The high cost of electricity is mainly attributed to the delay in the arrival of natural gas in Cyprus. Stefanou accused the government of passivity in the matter of energy planning and called on it to take responsibility. Despite the difficulties, AHK estimates that adequacy challenges can be addressed by seeking alternative solutions to ensure electricity supply, while efforts are being made to maintain old generators.
