Illegal Animal Movements Fuel Foot-and-Mouth Disease Spread
Veterinary Services emphasize that illegal animal movements contribute to the spread of foot-and-mouth disease. Four cases of illegal animal trafficking have been identified in various areas of Cyprus (Tseri, Potamia, Livadia, Geri). In addition, it was observed that some livestock farmers obstruct inspections and that in some farms the number of animals found during culling was lower than the recorded number, indicating illegal movement or concealment of animals. Offenders will not receive compensation and will face the prescribed penalties.
