Farmers Demand End to Culling, Universal Vaccination for Foot-and-Mouth Disease

Agricultural organizations will request from the President of the Republic tomorrow the termination of the culling of healthy animals not affected by foot-and-mouth disease and the universal vaccination of all animals. This decision was made after a meeting in Aradippou with livestock farmers, who warned of mobilizations if their demands are not met. The Agricultural Organizations will also demand the immediate cessation of the policy of total culling of animals. Livestock farmers are protesting the culling methods, reporting that in some cases animals that had not received a sufficient dose of medication were killed with a knife. The Agricultural Organizations point out that Turkey, from where the virus was transferred to the occupied territories, implements a vaccination policy to combat foot-and-mouth disease and are asking the government to seek an exemption from the EU to be able to implement universal vaccination in Cyprus. In addition, they emphasize the need for control of the use of funds allocated by the EU for the control of zoonotic diseases in the occupied territories, as well as to ensure the effectiveness of the measures taken. The Agricultural Organizations express hope that the meeting with the President will lead to positive results, while warning that in the event of their demands not being met, they will proceed with mobilizations.
