Foot-and-Mouth Disease Outbreak in Cyprus: Vaccination Efforts Continue

The President of the Pan-Cypriot Veterinary Association, Dr. Dimitris Epameinondas, described the detection of foot-and-mouth disease cases in units in Geri and Dali as an unfortunate but probable event, emphasizing that the measures taken are effective. The Association is committed to the vaccination program provided by the Veterinary Services, aiming to vaccinate all sheep, goats, and cattle to achieve a high level of immunity. So far, 80% of cattle and 45% of sheep and goats have been vaccinated, with a goal of completing vaccinations throughout the free area by the end of March. A raid on a farm in Geri revealed cattle without markings, which is being investigated by the authorities. The spread of foot-and-mouth disease to Geri and Dali was a possible scenario, but this does not mean that the measures taken are ineffective. The Veterinary Services will conduct an epidemiological investigation to determine if there were pre-existing cases in the area. A surveillance zone has been established, covering approximately 45% of the country's livestock, however, this does not mean that 45% of the animals will be slaughtered. The authorities are following the prescribed procedures to limit the spread of the disease and protect livestock. Dr. Epameinondas called on all citizens to strictly adhere to the decrees and instructions of the Veterinary Services in order to limit the spread of foot-and-mouth disease and effectively address the crisis. Cooperation and compliance with measures are essential to protect animal health and the country's economy.
