Erhiurman Blames Greek Cypriot Farmers for Tension in Buffer Zone, Proposes Communication Mechanism

Tufan Erhiurman is reintroducing the proposal for the creation of a communication mechanism for the Green Line, ensuring direct dialogue between the National Guard and the occupying forces. The purpose of the mechanism is to directly address issues arising on the ground and avoid delays. Erhiurman stated that activities by Greek Cypriot farmers within and around the buffer zone caused tension in the last days of 2025, while also expressing his discomfort with the subsequent statements from the Greek Cypriot side. He pointed out that information was requested from the United Nations regarding these incidents and dialogue began. Erhiurman argued that the United Nations must faithfully implement existing agreements and ensure the effective functioning of communication channels in order to avoid similar incidents in the future. He stressed the need to strengthen preventive dialogue and avoid statements that worsen the climate. The proposal for the communication mechanism is part of a package of ten points that has been submitted to the negotiating table, with the aim of improving the situation in the Green Line and avoiding further tensions.
