Artificial Intelligence in Education: The Fundamental Role of Reading

The role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Education and the best way to integrate AI tools into the learning process is a pressing issue. In Greece, the government is proactively promoting programs such as “AI in Schools,” in collaboration with AI giants. This initiative promises a radical transformation of (secondary) education through the use of AI tools by teachers and students. However, while these tools have the potential to support significant reforms, their implementation cannot solely rely on a mechanistic introduction into the educational system. To achieve positive educational outcomes, it is crucial to simultaneously strengthen students' linguistic and expressive skills. Diligent reading by students is a feasible and effective way to achieve this goal. If students read extensively during their education and learn to critically analyze textual content, they will be well-prepared to face the challenges of the AI era. Only then will the new generation be able to effectively utilize AI tools and address the potential risks they pose. The revival of a love for books and language, in general, is today, in the age of AI, the most important and critical reform in education. This is confirmed by the inherent function of AI itself, which essentially mimics the learning process through patterns of human experience and social intelligence, including interaction with written and spoken language. The success of AI reminds us of the powerful impact of reading on the human mind – simple but continuous reading shapes and develops the brain into thought.
