Supreme Court Increases Compensation for Soldier Injured in Mari Tragedy

The Supreme Court of Cyprus has increased the compensation amount for a soldier, Andreas Christodoulou, who was injured in the explosion at the 'Evangelos Florakis' naval base in Mari on July 11, 2011. The decision concerns an appeal by the Attorney General and a counter-appeal by the soldier. The Court decided to increase the general damages from €80,000 to €90,000, including loss of future earnings, estimated at €50,000. The Mari explosion, the Court recalls, was a tragic day for Cyprus, causing extensive damage, deaths, and injuries. Andreas Christodoulou, who was 19 years old and serving at the base at the time of the explosion, suffered permanent hearing damage in both ears, resulting in hearing loss and tinnitus. The soldier had filed a lawsuit in the Larnaca District Court, seeking compensation for physical injuries, pain, suffering, loss of amenities, and loss of future income. The District Court had awarded €80,000 for general damages and €168.79 for special damages, as well as court costs. Both sides had appealed the District Court's decision. The Attorney General considered the amount of general damages excessive, while the soldier challenged certain aspects of the decision. The Supreme Court, after examining the circumstances and factors affecting the calculation of compensation, decided to increase the amount, taking into account the soldier's age and his inability to pursue his desired profession.
