Germany Pledges Support for Cyprus, Discusses Regional Security with Greece

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock assured her Greek counterpart, Giorgos Gerapetritis, that Germany will stand with Cyprus whenever needed, both politically and militarily. The assurance was given in Berlin following a meeting between the two ministers. Mr. Gerapetritis emphasized the link between EU security and the situation in the Middle East and expressed Greece's solidarity with the Gulf countries. Mr. Baerbock referred to Germany's existing presence in the region through UNIFIL and the country's priority to the northern and eastern sector of NATO. While he did not directly answer the question about potential support for a possible Cypriot request to join NATO, Mr. Gerapetritis assured that Greece would support Cyprus's choices. Both sides agreed that there is currently no immediate need for additional assistance to Cyprus, but Germany will be ready to intervene if necessary. Europe, according to the two ministers, is united on this issue.
