NATO decided to withdraw its mission from Iraq

NATO has decided to withdraw its mission from Iraq due to the escalation of tensions in the Middle East. The decision involves an "adjustment" of the deployment of NATO forces, with an emphasis on the safety of personnel. NATO spokesperson Alison Hart stated that political dialogue and cooperation with Iraq will continue. According to reports, the mission has already been withdrawn, with the exception of a small detachment of Turkish and Romanian troops. Approximately 45 American soldiers have already left the Iraqi base in Baghdad. The Iraqi government has been informed of the decision and has agreed with it. The NATO mission in Iraq, which began in 2018, is non-combat and focuses on providing advice and strengthening Iraqi military and security forces. The decision to withdraw comes in a context of increased attacks on the American presence in Iraq by pro-Iranian armed groups. Despite the withdrawal, NATO is committed to continuing cooperation with Iraq at the political and practical levels, through the NATO Mission in Iraq.
