University of Cyprus Mourns Former President George Vassiliou

The University of Cyprus expressed its deep sorrow over the passing of former President of the Republic of Cyprus, George Vassiliou. The institution described him as the "political founder" of the university, recognizing his crucial contribution to the establishment of the first public university in Cyprus in 1989. President Vassiliou supported the development of higher education in Cyprus with foresight and courage, at a time when the idea of a Cypriot university was not easily accepted. The founding of the University of Cyprus allowed citizens access to higher education, the return of researchers and scientists to Cyprus, and the development of a university culture. The Rector of the University of Cyprus, Tasos Christofides, emphasized that the university is one of the most important investments ever made in Cyprus, and expressed the institution's eternal gratitude for President Vassiliou's trust and support. His contribution to the autonomous development of the university and the attraction of leading scientists, such as Christoforos Pissarides, was decisive.
