Decision to Lift Sizopoulos' Immunity. "Accountability Where It Belongs"

The Supreme Court of Cyprus decided to lift the parliamentary immunity of Marinos Sizopoulos, following a request from the Attorney General. The decision was based on evidence that emerged from the Independent Authority Against Corruption and testimonies implicating Mr. Sizopoulos in offenses. The Court ruled that the conditions for lifting immunity were met, as the offenses are punishable by imprisonment for more than two years. The Attorney General argued that lifting the immunity serves the public interest and ensures that Mr. Sizopoulos will be treated like any other citizen. Mr. Sizopoulos' lawyer, on the other hand, stated that his client does not object to the lifting of immunity, as he wishes to prove his innocence through the judicial process. Mr. Sizopoulos welcomed the investigation of the case and stated that he wants the truth to prevail. The Court emphasized that the presumption of innocence remains intact and that the examination of the evidence at this stage is limited to ascertaining that the Attorney General's request is not arbitrary.
