Turkey Plans 2026 Exploration in Syrian Waters

Turkey plans to sign a specific agreement with Syria in 2026 for underwater exploration along the Syrian coast, though this does not necessarily entail drilling. Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar stated that a framework agreement already exists, but a more detailed agreement is needed for operations at sea, with the potential for seismic surveys to begin. This move is part of Turkey's broader energy strategy for 2026, which includes significant investments and collaborations both domestically and internationally. The goal is to strengthen the country's energy security and geopolitical position. Turkey is investing in acquiring gas fields from the US, while Russia is beginning the transfer of $9 billion for the Akkuyu nuclear power plant. Additionally, energy agreements with Russia are being extended for one year on the same terms, and investments in gas fields in northern Iraq are being considered. In an effort to diversify, the capacity to import gas from Turkmenistan will be increased via Iran. Simultaneously, Turkey is developing gold mining in Niger and increasing natural gas production in the Black Sea. Finally, the creation of a rare earth industrial facility with potential cooperation with Australia is being explored.
