Trump Hardens Stance on Cuba – Reactions in Havana

Donald Trump has hardened his tone towards Cuba, demanding the island nation reach a “deal” of unspecified nature “before it’s too late.” He also announced that the shipment of oil and money to Cuba would cease. These statements have provoked strong reactions from the Havana government, with President Miguel Díaz-Canel describing Cuba as a “free, independent, and sovereign nation.” Trump accused Cuba of providing “security services” to the former dictators of Venezuela in exchange for oil and money, a practice he claims ended with the capture of Nicolás Maduro. He argued that Cuba should take responsibility for Cubans who have left the country. The former president also referenced the “Donro Doctrine,” a play on his name and the Monroe Doctrine, implying a more interventionist policy in Latin America. He even expressed the opinion that Marco Rubio, the son of Cuban immigrants, could be a good president for Cuba. Cuba has been under a US embargo since 1962. Trump’s statements come just days after the operation in which Nicolás Maduro, an ally of Cuba, was captured, resulting in the deaths of dozens of people.
