Understaffed Beaches: Safety of Human Lives Must Be a Priority for the Government

Trade unions OEKDY SEK, PASYEK PEO, and DEE KKOKO DEOK are warning the Government not to make decisions that would endanger safety on beaches in order to serve other interests. The issue of beach understaffing was raised at the Ministry of Interior in June 2025. At the meeting, all members of the beach safety committee agreed that lifeguard towers should be staffed with at least two lifeguards, rejecting requests from some municipalities for only one lifeguard. It was considered that staffing with one lifeguard would endanger both swimmers and the lifeguards themselves. The trade unions emphasize that the safety of human life must be a priority and that they will not accept any reduction in beach safety. They warn of dynamic reaction if the Government undervalues human life. They reiterate the need for adequate staffing of beaches with lifeguards, to meet the needs of swimmers at all times of the day.
