AKEL Official Urges Immediate Action on Cyprus Water Crisis

The Paphos provincial secretary of AKEL, Andreas Fakontis, expressed strong concerns about the critical water situation in Cyprus, particularly in Paphos. He emphasized the urgent need for solutions, pointing out that the situation is tragic and threatens both farmers and the availability of water for the summer. Dam capacity in Paphos is at 12%, significantly lower compared to 26% during the same period last year. Mr. Fakontis proposed raising small dams to store more rainwater and reminded of the pending construction of two additional dams in Paphos since 2000. Furthermore, he mentioned that the desalination unit in Kouklia could increase its production, but no decision has been made by the government. Finally, he pointed out that Paphos's water needs exceed 45,000 cubic meters, while desalination production will only reach 32, and significant amounts of water are lost due to damaged pipelines.
