UN Envoy: UN Will Persist in Seeking a Cyprus Solution

The UN Special Representative to Cyprus, Hasan Dżian, stated that the UN will not abandon its efforts to find a solution to the Cyprus issue, despite the difficulties. He emphasized that the UN is constantly seeking opportunities for a solution and that the UN family hopes for a positive outcome. The statement comes at a time of heightened tension in the region and reminds us of the UN's long-standing commitment to resolving the Cyprus issue. Mr. Dżian referred to the three main challenges facing the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus: the demarcation of the buffer zone, unauthorized activities within it, and the implementation of the Security Council mandate for military communication between the two sides. He acknowledged that addressing these challenges is complex and requires continuous effort. Mr. Dżian referred to the call by UN Secretary-General António Guterres for the two communities to overcome the issue of recognition, stressing that there is a precedent for successful cooperation, such as police cooperation through the Joint Contact Committee. He underlined the UN’s willingness to implement any agreement reached to open new crossing points. Mr. Dżian said that the UN Secretary-General chose to engage with the Cyprus issue immediately after taking office, and that he continued to pursue a solution even after the failure of Crans-Montana. His statement is a clear reassurance of the UN’s continued commitment to resolving the Cyprus issue and restoring peace and stability to the island.
