Christodoulides at European Council: EU can substantially contribute to progress in the Cyprus issue – Status of British Bases also on the table

President Christodoulides, during the European Council, emphasized the European Union's potential to contribute to progress in the Cyprus issue, highlighting the EU's ability to demonstrate the benefits of a solution to Turkey. The issue of the status of the British Bases was also discussed, with the President proposing the start of a dialogue after the end of the war in the Middle East. During the discussion on the crisis in the Middle East, President Christodoulides referred to the response of some EU member states to the crisis in the British Bases, which indirectly activated Article 42(7) of the Treaty on Solidarity. He stressed the need for an EU initiative to de-escalate the crisis and to start a dialogue on the status of the Bases. While President Christodoulides was speaking, he received an alert for an alarm in Akrotiri, highlighting the tension in the region. He explained the situation in Cyprus to the EU leaders and proposed a dialogue with the British government on the status of the Bases after the war in the Middle East. Cyprus received support from several countries (Greece, Ireland, France, Spain, Germany, Netherlands, Italy) on the issue of security and the promotion of the activation of Article 42(7) of the Treaty. The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, also expressed her support for Cyprus.
