The Mayor of Idalion, Stavros Chatzigiannis, is awaiting updates from the relevant authorities to improve coordination in addressing the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in the area. The Idalion region has approximately 100 livestock farms and a livestock population of 100,000 cows, sheep, and pigs. The Mayor hopes the disease will be limited to the one infected farm and will not spread to the wider livestock zone. The Municipality of Idalion has already taken measures a month ago, after the detection of the first case in the Larnaca region, with the installation of 11 automated spraying systems at entrances and exits of livestock zones. After the detection of the new case, additional measures were taken, such as the creation of “spraying covers”. The Mayor appealed to the public to avoid visiting or passing through the infected area, with satisfactory results. The Veterinary Services and the Forestry Department are on site. Mr. Chatzigiannis acknowledges that the spread of the disease was expected, given the distance from the initially infected area and the possibility of transmission through the air. The Municipality did everything it could, while farmers also took additional measures to protect their animals. The Mayor expresses concern about the possible spread of the disease to larger livestock farms that produce milk, as well as the potential damage to the Dali livestock zone. He calls on citizens to help prevent the spread of the disease by avoiding travel to the area of the infected farm.
