President of KSEEK: Optimistic Future for Domestic Defense Industry - Cyprus' Strategic Advantage

The President of the Cyprus Association of Research and Innovation Companies (KSEEK), Tasos Kounoudis, expresses optimism about the future of the Cypriot defense industry. He notes that the industry has begun to leave its mark on the European value chain and the domestic economy, transitioning from research and development to a phase of testing and commercial exploitation. Cyprus' strategic advantage lies in the development of innovative, high-tech systems. Mr. Kounoudis emphasizes the pursuit of Cypriot companies to strengthen exports and penetrate new markets beyond Europe. Cypriot systems have already been exported and are used by advanced armies. Emphasis is placed on areas such as unmanned systems, electronic warfare, cybersecurity, sensors, and space applications. Significant support is provided by the Ministry of Defense, particularly in research and innovation. 20 Cypriot companies participate in 57 projects of the EDIDP and European Defense Fund programs, having absorbed approximately 50 million euros from the total budget of 860 million euros. More than 2,000 scientists and engineers work in the sector, and there are many collaborations between Cypriot and foreign companies. The National Guard is testing and evaluating Cypriot systems, with some already in operational use. KSEEK has signed memoranda of cooperation with similar organizations from France, Greece, Italy, and Poland, while collaborations with India and the United Kingdom are being explored.
