85% of Cattle and 45% of Sheep and Goats Vaccinated Against Foot-and-Mouth Disease

The President of the Pan-Cypriot Veterinary Association, Dr. Dimitris Epameinondas, stated that vaccination against foot-and-mouth disease has reached 85% coverage in cattle and 45% in sheep and goats on a nationwide basis. In the free province of Famagusta, cows in livestock units have been vaccinated, while 60% of sheep and goats have received the vaccine. In Larnaca, the first dose of vaccination has been completed. In total, there are approximately 500,000 sheep and goats and 90,000 cattle in Cyprus. Emphasis is placed on vaccinating large livestock units and those located near pig farms, due to the susceptibility of pigs to the virus. Regarding vaccines for pigs, efforts are being made to retrieve them from Germany.
