A Chaotic Day at School

A former High School Principal shared with the author an experience from a chaotic day at his school, which highlighted the difficulties of dealing with school violence. Despite his good intentions and love for the children, the Principal was unable to prevent the outbreak of violence caused by a disagreement regarding the appearance of four students who were about to participate in a school trip. The students, with a history of extreme delinquent behavior, had gained the Principal's trust and been integrated into the school environment. However, when they were banned from participating in the trip due to their inappropriate clothing, they reacted with vandalism and destruction at the school. The Principal acknowledged that his attempt to cooperate with his subordinates and avoid conflict led him to not make the decision he considered right. Nevertheless, he failed to prevent the violence, highlighting the importance of taking responsibility and 'loneliness' in leadership, even if it means facing opposition from others. This story highlights the complexity of dealing with school violence and the need for a balance between cooperation, strictness, and responsibility on the part of educators and principals.
