Age Matters: How Older Travelers Respond to Influencers

A new study in the 'Tourism Management' journal highlights the importance of travel influencer age for older travelers. Researchers found that older travelers tend to respond more positively to influencers in the same age group, as they perceive them as more relatable and trustworthy when evaluating a destination. This is explained by the theory of social comparison, which involves two processes: assimilation, where the traveler identifies with the influencer, and contrast, where they seek to differentiate themselves, feeling younger. Conversely, younger influencers may create a sense of distance due to the large age gap. The preference for older influencers is strengthened when the activity proposed is demanding, as travelers seek more 'relevant' role models to assess their capabilities. In more relaxed activities, the influencer's age is less important.
