AKEL Ends Cooperation with MP Charalambidou Due to Potential Alliance with Another Party

AKEL General Secretary Stefanos Stefanou announced the definitive end of the party's cooperation with MP Irene Charalambidou. The reason is that Ms. Charalambidou rejected the party's proposal to continue the cooperation under a new framework, due to the three-term limit, and left open the possibility of running in the elections with another party. AKEL had started a dialogue with Ms. Charalambidou months ago, offering her a new proposal, but she did not submit a counter-proposal and continued to leave open the possibility of cooperating with another party. Mr. Stefanou stressed that Ms. Charalambidou's attitude does not allow for the continuation of the cooperation, as it violates political ethics and deontology. The decision came two months before the elections, but AKEL argues that it tried to exhaust every possibility to maintain the cooperation. Ms. Charalambidou had stated that she had not made her decisions, but recently seemed to be approaching a cooperation with another party. As a result of the termination of the cooperation, Ms. Charalambidou also loses the Presidency of the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights and Equality, which will pass to Giorgos Koukoumas, Spokesperson of AKEL.
