Akrotiri Evacuation Extended: Schools Remain Closed

The British Bases authorities, in collaboration with the Republic of Cyprus, have decided to extend the evacuation measures for the Akrotiri area until next week. The decision was made following an assessment of the situation and is due to safety concerns. The situation will be re-evaluated on Saturday morning. Residents continue to be accommodated in hotels in Limassol and at the Monastery of Agios Georgios in Erimi. Schools in the area remain closed. The Mayor of Kourion, Pantelis Georgiou, stated that the municipality, in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, is trying to find alternative spaces for the continuation of students' education, in consultation with parents. The goal is to ensure a smooth educational process for the children of the area. The extension of security measures is deemed necessary to protect residents, given the prevailing uncertainty. The authorities are closely monitoring the situation and will make the necessary decisions based on new data. The safety of citizens is a priority. The cooperation between the British Bases and the Republic of Cyprus is ongoing and aims at the effective management of the crisis. Providing accommodation for displaced persons and finding solutions for the education of children are examples of this joint effort.
