Alleged Attack by Turkish Cypriot Forces on Greek Cypriot Farmers in Buffer Zone

Greek Cypriot farmers have reported an attack by members of the Turkish Cypriot military and pseudo-police in the buffer zone of the Mammari area while working in their fields. According to the complaint, more than 20 soldiers and pseudo-police officers attempted to arrest a young farmer and his father, approximately 300 meters from a Turkish outpost. UNFICYP personnel arrived at the scene but limited their involvement to observing and documenting the incident. President Nikos Christodoulides condemned the attack, describing it as a “piratical act.” He stated that the government is in constant communication with the United Nations and the Cypriot Police to ensure the safety of residents and farmers operating in the buffer zone areas. The incident occurred during a critical period of diplomatic contacts regarding the Cyprus issue. President Christodoulides announced that the issue will be raised during his next meeting with Tufan Erhürman. The complaint raises concerns about the challenges faced by farmers working near the buffer zone, and the government is committed to taking all necessary measures to protect them and prevent similar incidents in the future.
