Bulgaria Officially Adopts the Euro, Becoming the 21st Eurozone Member

Bulgaria officially adopted the euro on January 1st, 2026, becoming the 21st member of the Eurozone. The transition will be gradual, with the lev remaining a legal tender alongside the euro until the end of January. Until August 8th, 2026, prices will be displayed in both currencies. Citizens will be able to exchange leva for euros free of charge until mid-2026, while banks may apply conversion fees later. The National Bank of Bulgaria will continue to offer free exchange.
