Changes for Better Working Conditions in 2026 – Challenges for Cyprus

The European Commission is promoting the Quality Jobs Act, a new legislative package that will modernize worker protection rules by 2026. This initiative aims to improve working conditions in the EU, addressing the decline in real wages and job insecurity, while also ensuring productivity and competitiveness. The Quality Jobs Act focuses on fair wages, a safe working environment, access to education, stronger collective bargaining (aiming to cover 80% of workers), and protection during transitions (e.g., green/digital transition). It is based on the recommendations of the Draghi Report and signals the EU's political commitment to quality jobs. A significant element of the new law is the regulation of how work is organized by computer systems and Artificial Intelligence, such as platforms that calculate performance, software that assigns shifts, and systems that define work rules. The EU seeks to ensure that the use of these technologies does not lead to stressful working conditions. Consultation with social partners is underway, with the aim of gathering opinions on the direction of EU action. Cyprus is called upon to adapt to the new European standards and ensure that workers benefit from the changes.
