China's Record Trade Surplus of $1.2 Trillion Despite Trump's Tariff War

China recorded a record trade surplus in 2025, reaching $1.2 trillion, despite the tariff war imposed on it by Donald Trump. This surplus is due to the increase in China's exports to other global markets, such as Southeast Asia, Africa, and Latin America, as Chinese companies turn away from American consumers due to increased tariffs. China's exports to the US decreased by 19.5% in 2025 compared to 2024. However, China's overall trade surplus could lead to further tension in trade relations with the US. China saw a 13% increase in exports of high-tech products and a 27% increase in exports of electric vehicles, lithium batteries, and solar panels. Wang Jun, Deputy Director of the Customs Administration, stated that China “moved forward” despite the “complex and demanding external environment”. China's success demonstrates its ability to adapt to changes and find new markets for its products.
