Commission on Trump tariffs: “The EU wants to cooperate and not escalate”

The European Commission stated that the EU wants to cooperate with the US and avoid escalation, following US President Donald Trump's announcement of tariffs. The priority is to prevent tariffs, which would harm businesses and citizens on both sides of the Atlantic. Commission President Ursula von der Leyen assured that the EU will continue to support the sovereignty of Greenland and Denmark, while protecting its economic and security interests. In the event of tariffs being imposed, the EU has the tools to respond, including a package of retaliatory measures worth €93 billion, which has already been prepared. This package, although suspended, could be automatically activated on February 7, 2026, if the suspension is not renewed. The package could also be activated through the “trade bazooka” – Anti-Coercion Instrument (ACI), with France appearing as the main supporter of this option. The EU's response option will be determined by upcoming discussions and the convened emergency European Council. The EU seeks to find a solution through diplomacy and cooperation, but is ready to protect its interests if the situation escalates. Overall, the EU's stance on the threat of tariffs from Trump is cautious and decisive, with an emphasis on avoiding escalation and protecting the economic interests of member states.
