Concerns over National Security Prompt Proposed Restrictions on Property Sales to Foreigners

The General Secretary of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, submitted two bills to the Parliament aimed at restricting uncontrolled property sales in Cyprus, citing national security concerns. These proposals aim to prevent the purchase of land around critical infrastructure, such as airports, military camps, and the ceasefire line. Mr. Stefanou stated that there is increased interest in purchasing properties in these areas, with recent sales of large plots of land east of Larnaca and west of Limassol. The goal of the proposals is to protect the country and its fertile land, and to ensure that property purchases are made with criteria and support the construction industry and employment. The bills include a ban on the acquisition of forest or agricultural land near the ceasefire line, limiting purchases to one apartment or house, and preventing the acquisition of properties through companies. They also propose the repeal of provisions that allow foreigners to acquire large tracts of land. According to the proposals, approval from the Council of Ministers will not be required for the purchase of an apartment or house up to 200 square meters, or an office up to 300 square meters. The proposals aim to strengthen the control of legality and ensure transparency in the acquisition of properties by foreigners.
