Consumers Association: Fuel Subsidy Reinstatement is Essential

The Cypriot Consumers Association is calling for the immediate reinstatement of the fuel subsidy, arguing that prices have risen significantly since March 1st and are expected to continue to increase. Specifically, 95 octane gasoline has increased by 10.7 cents per liter, diesel by 16.7 cents, and heating oil by 13.6 cents. The Association points out that current prices are higher compared to 2022, when the first fuel subsidy was decided. Gasoline prices are only 2.1 cents lower than in 2022, while diesel is 7.9 cents more expensive and heating oil is 6 cents more expensive. Furthermore, the Consumer Price Index has increased, exacerbating the financial situation of consumers. The Association estimates that reinstating the subsidy could reduce prices by 8.3 cents per liter for gasoline and diesel and by 6.2 cents per liter for heating oil. Based on the above, the Association believes that reinstating the subsidy is necessary to support consumers and that public finances can withstand such a measure. It appeals to the Ministry of Finance to seriously consider the immediate reinstatement of the subsidy.
