Cyprus and Greece Reaffirm Defense Cooperation Amid Regional Tensions

The Ministers of Defense of Cyprus and Greece, Vasilis Palmas and Nikos Dendias, met at the "Andreas Papandreou" Air Base in Paphos, where Greek F-16 fighter jets have been deployed as part of the Greek-Cypriot defense cooperation. Mr. Palmas emphasized that the presence of the F-16s underscores Greece's practical support for Cyprus, given the increased regional tensions. The Cypriot Defense Minister thanked the Greek government for its prompt response to the request for support, emphasizing that the relationship between Cyprus and Greece is particularly strong and is cherished. He also reiterated that Cyprus is a peaceful country that does not seek aggressive actions, but has a duty to ensure the safety of its citizens and its territorial integrity. Mr. Dendias, for his part, expressed his satisfaction with the hospitality and thanked Mr. Palmas for the cooperation. He made no statements regarding the F-16s for security reasons. The meeting took place during a period of heightened concern in the region, against the backdrop of the crisis in the Middle East. Cyprus is also monitoring developments regarding the possible dispatch of a British warship to protect the British Bases, without yet having formed an official position.
