Cyprus and Ukraine Discuss EU Presidency and Support

The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, held a telephone conversation with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The conversation took place at the initiative of Mr. Zelenskyy, as Cyprus assumes the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Mr. Zelenskyy congratulated Mr. Christodoulides and informed him that he will attend the official opening ceremony of the Cypriot Presidency in 2026, while they also discussed the latest developments in Ukraine. President Christodoulides reiterated Cyprus's steadfast support for the Ukrainian people, its sovereignty, and its independence. He emphasized that this stance stems from the common values and principles that govern the Republic of Cyprus, which has itself experienced the consequences of invasion and occupation. Cyprus pledged that support for Ukraine will be a key priority during its Presidency of the Council of the EU. It expressed its readiness to actively contribute to Ukraine's European path and to the defense of international law. The telephone conversation highlights the importance of the Cypriot EU Presidency and the opportunity to promote European values and principles, as well as to support Ukraine during a critical period.
