Cyprus: Blind Individuals Lose Monthly Allowance, Organization Protests 'Exclusion'

The Pan-Cyprian Organization of the Blind is protesting the abolition of a €382 monthly allowance for blind individuals, which had been provided since 1996. The organization reports that the examination of applications for the allowance stopped in September, leaving 15 blind individuals without the benefit. The organization argues that the abolition of the allowance will lead to economic hardship for the blind and sends a negative message to society. Furthermore, they claim that blind individuals have also been deprived of a special domestic electricity rate they were entitled to under European regulations. The organization is calling on Parliament to reject the law abolishing the allowance and is planning a protest rally outside the Presidential Palace.
