Cyprus Journalists' Union Calls for Investigation into Press Credentials

The Cyprus Journalists' Union (ESK) has decided to request an immediate and ex officio investigation by the Parliamentary Committee on Interior regarding the issue of press credentials. The ESK is reacting to the Ministry of Interior's attempt, following recommendations from the European Federation of Journalists, to make the Press and Information Office the sole judge of journalistic identity, disregarding the valid press card issued by the ESK since 1959. The ESK believes that this attempt constitutes a threat to press freedom and calls on political parties to support its request for transparency and respect for the self-regulation of the journalistic profession. It points out that the state's claim is based on an inactive law from 1989 that does not cover journalists from television, radio, and the internet. The ESK emphasizes that press cards are not issued by the state but by an independent Press Council that has never functioned. The invocation of the 1989 law demonstrates the problematic handling of media issues by the state for decades. Finally, the ESK calls on Parliament to investigate the violation of European obligations and the government's refusal to implement the Council of Europe Recommendation recognizing trade union press cards. The attempt to impose state certification is considered to conflict with the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA), while the European Federation of Journalists warns of a possible complaint to the European regulatory authority.
