Cyprus Journalists' Union Calls for Investigation into Press Credentials

The Cyprus Journalists' Union (ESK) has decided to request an immediate and ex officio investigation into the issue of press credentials by the Parliamentary Committee on Interior Affairs. The ESK is reacting to the Ministry of Interior's attempt to make the Press and Information Office the sole judge of journalistic identity, disregarding the valid and internationally recognized press card of the ESK, which has been issued since 1959. The ESK believes that this action constitutes a threat to press freedom and calls on political parties to support its request for transparency and legality. It points out that the Ministry's effort is based on an inactive 1989 law that does not cover journalists from television, radio, and the internet. The ESK calls on Parliament to investigate the violation of European obligations and the government's refusal to implement Recommendation 2016/4 of the Council of Europe, which recognizes trade union press cards. It believes that the attempt to impose “state certification” refers to practices that conflict with the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA). The European Federation of Journalists has already expressed its concern, emphasizing that the issuance of press cards by a government body violates European legal standards and may lead to a complaint to the European regulatory authority for media and the European Board of Services for Media (EBMS).
