Cyprus Presidency Secures Agreement on Common Organisation of Markets Reform

The Cypriot Presidency of the European Union has secured a political agreement on the reform of the Common Organisation of Markets (COM) regulatory framework, an initiative aimed at strengthening the position of farmers and ensuring fairer conditions in the agri-food chain. This reform was a priority for Cyprus, responding to the concerns of European producers about their income and position in the value chain. The agreement provides for mandatory written contracts between farmers and buyers, specifying price, quantity and terms of cooperation in advance, thus limiting unfair practices. In addition, the labeling of origin of agricultural products is strengthened without burdening producers with additional administrative procedures. The Cypriot Presidency played a crucial role in the negotiations, achieving an agreement considered a significant breakthrough for strengthening the position of producers in the market.
