Cyprus President Calls for Emergency EU Meeting After Trump's Tariff Threats

Published January 18, 2026, 10:19

The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, announced the convening of an emergency meeting of the Committee of Permanent Representatives in Brussels to discuss the imposition of new tariffs by the United States on EU countries. An emergency session of the European Council is also not ruled out in the coming days to examine the issue and reach a common response. This move comes in response to Donald Trump's threat to impose tariffs of up to 25% on products from certain European countries unless Greenland is “sold entirely” to the United States. The threat has caused turmoil in Europe, with leaders such as Emmanuel Macron and Jonas Gahr Støre condemning it as unacceptable. The majority of Greenlanders (85%) oppose the annexation of the island to the United States.
