Cyprus Supreme Court Increases Compensation for Sailor Injured in Mari Explosion

The Cyprus Supreme Court has increased the compensation awarded to a sailor injured in the deadly 2011 explosion at the Mari naval base. The initial compensation of €80,000 was raised to €90,000. The sailor, who was serving at the base when the explosion occurred, suffered permanent hearing damage and tinnitus in both ears. The case had previously been heard in a lower court, with appeals filed by both the Attorney General and the injured sailor. The Supreme Court, acknowledging the severe impact of the injury on the sailor's quality of life, decided to increase the compensation. The Mari explosion had tragic consequences, resulting in the deaths of 13 people and injuries to many others, with the effects still being felt today.
