Cyprus to Enhance Mass Communication System for Crisis Situations

The Commander of Civil Defence, Maria Papa, announced that the state is proceeding with the creation of a "mass population information system in crisis situations," expected to be completed in early June. The aim is to provide timely and accurate information to citizens in emergency situations. Ms. Papa acknowledged that there are weaknesses in the system but stressed that efforts are being made to address them, with the cooperation of various parties and the support of the state. The recent test message campaign, initiated by the Deputy Ministry of Innovation and in collaboration with mobile providers, was described as an "intermediate solution" and presented some weaknesses. Feedback is already being collected to improve the system, and a repeat test is expected in the coming days. Ms. Papa urged citizens to follow official announcements and stay informed about the measures they need to take in the event of a crisis, emphasizing that information increases resilience and the ability to cope with risk. Civil Defence is working with a focus on preparation and prevention, without causing panic, and seeks to be prepared for any eventuality. The completion of the mass communication system is expected to contribute significantly to more effective crisis management.
