Denmark Prepares the Ground: Sends Military Reinforcements to Greenland – Will Strengthen its Presence in the Arctic

Denmark has begun sending military reinforcements and preliminary forces to Greenland, in response to increased geopolitical pressures and strong rhetoric from the United States regarding control of the island. An “advanced detachment” of the Danish armed forces has already arrived in Greenland, with the mission of preparing infrastructure and the supply chain for the possible reception of larger military forces. The reinforcements include soldiers from Army units, who will strengthen Denmark's military presence in the Arctic. However, a large part of the Danish land forces remains committed to missions in the Baltic states, as part of Denmark's obligations to NATO, limiting the forces immediately available for deployment to Greenland. A Challenger-type aircraft of the Danish Air Force landed at Nuuk Airport on Monday, but it was not confirmed whether the flight was directly related to the military reinforcement operation. Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen stated that Denmark is moving towards a more permanent and increased military presence in Greenland, which will also include the participation of other countries. The strengthening of the military presence is considered a “clear response to the challenges facing the Arctic.” It aims to address the growing geopolitical tensions in the region and protect the interests of Denmark and Greenland. Exercises and training activities of NATO member states are expected in the area in 2025 and 2026.
